Our Story: Almshouse to Households
The Otsego County farm and Poor House dates to 1827. This facility was instituted to serve the destitute. It did so until 1958 when a new County Home and Infirmary was built to address deficiencies of the Poor House. In 1975, the capacity of the Infirmary was doubled, to 174 residents, with the addition of two new wings. The following year the facility was renamed “The Meadows”.

In 1997, the County Board reviewed options to replace the outdated Meadows structure. This led to a workshop with David Green of Evergreen Retirement Community, Oshkosh, WI. Mr. Green noted "applying the institutional medical model of hospitals to nursing homes was fundamentally flawed," referring to the traditional approach to nursing home design. "Long-term care is not just about curing, it's about living."

Ultimately, Otsego Manor was created around a social model of care to be delivered in fifteen unique households that honor those who reside in them. This beautiful, state-of-the-art building in Cooperstown, NY has become home to individuals with a variety of strengths and talents. Our goal is to support people’s choices and abilities as they live each day.
