Robert H. Hurlbut credits his parents, Martha and Harold, for instilling in him the desire to care for the elderly. When Robert was a child, his parents cared for elderly people in their home that could no longer care for themselves.
The Hurlbut, founded in 1969 by Robert H. Hurlbut and named in honor of his parents, is a living tribute to the family’s steadfast commitment to providing the highest level of quality care while enriching one’s quality of life. It is with great pride that alongside their father, Robert’s children now represent the third generation of caring.

SERVICES OFFERED
Our compassionate, friendly and professional staff includes certified physical, occupational and speech therapists as well as social workers who are specially trained in geriatric care. Staff members work in concert with residents, family members and personal physicians to preserve the highest possible level of resident dignity and independence.
We take great pride in our short-term rehabilitation program. Participants in this program are our “guests†as their stay with us is temporary. Our therapists, along with each guest’s personal physician, create individualized programs designed to meet the rehabilitative needs of each participant and maximizing their full potential with the goal being their return to an independent setting.
With an established reputation as an innovator within the rehabilitative community, we offer a broad range of mobility-enhancing therapies that improve our residents’ quality of life.
In order to maintain our exceptional level of quality care, our staff members participate in ongoing training programs and health-related seminars within their respective fields. Our carefully chosen team of professionals is ready 24 hours a day to provide our residents with the skilled services they may need. We are dedicated to ensuring that the needs of our residents as well as their family members are being met.
The Hurlbut is proud to be a specialty program of diabetes management and education. Our staff has received special training in diabetes care provided by the Joslin Diabetes Center. Through Joslin’s affiliation with Harvard Medical School and with a staff of leaders in their field, Joslin has emerged as the global leader in innovative research and pioneering approaches to education and clinical care. The Hurlbut features a full-time onsite Diabetes Care Coordinator as a resource to patients, families, staff and physicians. Joslin Diabetes Center provides ongoing oversight of this program.

Accommodations
Although our resident rooms are fully furnished, our residents are welcome to bring familiar items such as photographs and other special mementos with them to help create a feeling of home here at The Hurlbut.
We provide complete laundry and housekeeping services as well as easy and convenient access to dental, podiatry, optometry, beauty shop and barber services.
Cable television and telephone service are conveniently available in each resident room. We furnish all resident bedrooms and restrooms with a special nurse call system to reassure our residents that personal nursing assistance, if needed, is immediately available.
The Hurlbut is surrounded by lush garden walkways, beautifully landscaped courtyards and spacious patios. Each of our resident rooms offers a view of our lovely courtyards and grounds so the beauty of each season can be enjoyed by all.
Our single-level floor plan lends itself to easy mobility for our residents as they visit with friends, dine and attend activities within the facility.
Capturing a piece of our traditional past, we have preserved the beautiful mantle that welcomed residents to the original Hurlbut Nursing Home on Mt. Hope Avenue. It is now elegantly displayed within The Hurlbut lobby.
Our beautifully decorated living, dining and activity rooms provide our residents with safe and comfortable settings in which they can relax, socialize and share special moments while enjoying all the comforts of home.
RECREATION/ACTIVITIES
Finding ways to enrich the lives of our residents so they may continue to feel challenged, active and involved is one of the primary goals of our activities staff. Our residents experience the delight of new friendships, new interests and new enthusiasm as they participate in a variety of social and recreational activities designed to enhance their emotional and spiritual health and well-being.
Among our many popular social activities are frequent day trips in our wheelchair-accessible activity mini-bus to concerts, museums and restaurants. Our residents also enjoy experiencing music therapy, visits from special animal friends and participation in The Hurlbut’s art therapy program.
Cultural and religious services are also provided for all faiths.
DIET & NUTRITION
The aroma of home-cooked meals, prepared by our outstanding food service team, invites residents to socialize and dine within a family setting. Our dedicated food service staff takes great pride in preparing delicious, home-cooked meals designed to meet the dietary and nutritional needs of each resident.
While we strongly believe our residents benefit greatly from socializing with their friends while they dine, we are sensitive to those residents who may require our personalized room service. Friends and family are always welcome to join their loved one for a delicious meal.
ADMISSIONS
The comfort and well-being of our residents is of the utmost importance to us at The Hurlbut. The Hurlbut is affiliated with a number of area hospitals. We accept numerous forms of insurance. Please inquire about our special rate program with Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
