General Facility and Program Information

The Oneida Healthcare Center Extended Care Facility (ECF) was established in 1974 and provides quality long term extended care and rehabilitative services to the Greater Oneida Community. The ECF is certified by the New York State Department of Health and accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. The total number of certified beds is 160; 149 skilled-nursing/restorative and 11 ventilator-dependent beds.

The ECF accepts Medicare, Medicaid, and Private-Pay residents and currently has a contract with Hospice Care, Inc., of New Hartford, New York. Information about other payor sources may change from time to time. Questions about other payor sources may be directed to the Admissions Coordinator's Office. The ECF provides assistance with applying for Medicare and/or Medicaid upon request to our current residents or their designated representatives.

The ECF provides an array of services that includes restorative and maintenance therapies (Physical, Occupational, Speech, Recreational and Massage Therapies). The facility also houses dental and optometry suites on the premises, affording residents the choice of not having to travel outside the facility to receive these services.

The ECF is conveniently located directly behind the Oneida Healthcare Center Hospital facility, which enhances the timeliness of the provision of any acute care services its residents may need.

The East Wing of the ECF's Fifth Floor is dedicated to an 11-bed ventilator dependent unit. This unit is staffed with ventilator-certified and licensed professionals who have received specific training in the care and treatment of residents who are ventilator-dependent. When medically feasible, portable ventilator equipment enables our residents to attend events, programs, and appointments away from their unit. This unit provides a more residential atmosphere for those individuals who are dependent on a ventilator, but are not able to return to their community residence. Rehabilitative services for those residents who are able to be weaned from ventilator-dependency are also provided.

Medical Care Services are provided by an on-staff physician group, consisting of credentialed general practitioners/internal medicine specialists, a pulmonary care specialist, a dentist, an optometrist, a psychologist, a psychiatrist, and a podiatrist.

A fully equipped Beauty Salon/Barber Shop is also available on the premises. Services are provided Monday through Friday by appointments with a beautician or on a monthly basis with the barber.

The Oneida Healthcare Center Auxiliary operates a gift shop on the first floor of the ECF. It carries a variety of candies, plush stuffed animals, personal care items, fresh floral arrangements, balloons and greeting cards.

Our Recreational Therapy Department coordinates a variety of daily and special activities and events. A few of the special events the ECF offers to its residents and family members include:

Bi-annual, in-house, shopping provided by Shoppers Service. This affords our residents to select and try on clothing, footwear, and accessories. This traveling retailer brings its wares to the facility and completes measurements when alterations are needed for clothing purchases.
Annual Men's Barbecue with guests visiting from the International Boxing Hall of Fame's induction weekend ceremonies. And the annual Ladies Luncheon with special menu and entertainment. Both of these events enable our residents to invite a guest to join them for a special occasion that is always looked forward to with great anticipation.
Trips to local attractions are regularly scheduled. Concerts in the park and trips out to shop, dine, attend area arts performances, or special community events such as parades or picnics keep our residents active in the community.
Special theme days and parties are a regular occurrence, and holidays always receive extra special attention by all the staff in the Facility.
Admission Information
Admissions are based on medical necessity. Criteria for admission is based on the level of care needed by the applicant and the ability of the facility to meet all of the applicant's needs. Priority for admission to the facility is given to those residents who are inpatients at the Oneida Healthcare Center's Acute Care Hospital who are awaiting transfer to a long term/rehabilitative nursing facility. The facility does incur situations where there is a vacancy for which there is not an applicant currently in the Oneida Healthcare Center's Hospital. During these situations, the Admissions Coordinator and Screening Nurse will assess applicants in other hospitals, nursing facilities, or at community residences to offer the vacancy to the applicant who is in greatest need of the facility's services.

The initial step in applying for admission should be to contact Denise M. Schreck, Admission Coordinator. Please call Denise at (315) 361-2018 or email her at dschreck@oneidahealthcare.org to request an application form.

Special Employment Opportunities

The Facility offers an array of positions in the healthcare field. For general information about employment opportunities...please refer to the Job Center section.

One position of particular note is specific to the ECF, is the Certified Nursing Assistant. The Facility sponsors a 4-week Certified Nursing Assistant classes on a regular basis right on the premises. Training is provided by the Staff Development Department and testing is conducted right on site. If you are an individual interesting in caring for the elderly and those in need of rehabilitative care in a long term care setting, please contact our Nursing Office at (315) 361-2019 for more information about this training.

Volunteers at the Extended Care Facility

Are you a caring individual who has a day or two or even a few free hours a week? Would you like to build some friendships and have a warm feeling of being able to give something back to those members of our community that have given so much to us?

Then, perhaps becoming an ECF Volunteer is the opportunity you have been looking for. Volunteers at the ECF perform a wide array of services to our nursing home residents, such as: one-to-one visiting, greeting visitors, delivering and perhaps assisting with reading of the residents' mail, assisting residents at activities or meal times and working the gift shop. The ECF provides a minimum of two structured activities per day for our residents, in addition to their therapies and other appointments.

Individuals who would like more information about our Volunteer Program need only call our coordinator at (315) 363-6000, ext. 8313.
